Terms of Use
The rules for using Hamster, in plain English. By using the app, you agree to them.
What Hamster is
Hamster is an app for tracking side hustle income and costs and estimating the tax you might owe. It is a tracking and estimate tool. It does not give tax, financial or legal advice, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by HMRC.
Your tax return is your responsibility
You remain responsible for your own tax affairs, including what you report to HMRC, filing your Self Assessment tax return on time and paying the right amount. If you’re unsure about anything, check GOV.UK or speak to an accountant.
Estimates can be wrong
Hamster’s figures are estimates based on the information you enter and the tax rules we’ve built in. They may be inaccurate or incomplete, and tax rates and rules change. Hamster does not cover every situation, such as Scottish income tax rates or student loan repayments. Don’t rely on Hamster alone when deciding what to file or pay. You can read how we check our numbers.
Free features and Premium
Hamster’s core features are free. Some extra features need a Premium subscription, which costs £4.99 a month or £47.99 a year. Prices in the app or store at the time you subscribe take priority if they differ.
Billing, renewal and cancelling
Premium is billed through Google Play or the App Store, using the account you subscribe with. Where a free trial is offered, you’ll be charged when it ends unless you cancel before then. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each month or year until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in your Google Play or App Store subscription settings; Premium stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription.
Refunds
Refunds are handled by Google Play or Apple under their own refund policies, not by Hamster. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Your data stays on your device
The information you enter into Hamster is stored on your device, not on our servers. That means you’re responsible for keeping it backed up, and we can’t recover it if your device is lost or the app is deleted. Our privacy policy has the details.
Acceptable use
Use Hamster for its intended purpose and within the law. Don’t try to copy, modify, reverse engineer or resell the app, get around Premium, or interfere with how it works.
Limitation of liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not responsible for any penalties, interest or other losses that result from relying on Hamster’s estimates, and our liability to you is limited. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
iPhone users
If you get Hamster from the App Store, Apple’s standard end user licence agreement also applies.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when we add features or the law changes. We’ll post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If you keep using Hamster after a change, the updated terms apply.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you can also bring a claim in your local courts.
